Dries Van Noten Inspirations Exhibition

Dries Van Noten

Even thou Dries Van Noten has been a designer for almost thirty years, his name is not the first one that comes up when thinking of fashion designers of our era. This might be due to the fact that this fashion house has no advertising campaigns. A “trick” that other brands are adopting, too (for example Zara) and that has contributed to the creation of Dries Van Noten: a private company that apparently generates around 30 million euro annually.

As part of the Antwerp Six (or Seven, including Martin Margiela), Dries Van Noten gives life to the unique designs that carry his name. His creations distinguished themselves from the Belgian minimalism in the early 90s, thanks to the eccentric and elaborate use of ethnic and floral prints, as well as different fabric textures: a signature trade that has been part of the brand identity since then.

His aesthetic is valued and appreciated all over the world, especially in northern Europe and Asia, as his stores in Hong Kong, Seoul, Tokyo and Singapore suggest.

In the hope that people would be able to really see the “beauty of fashion”, Dries Van Noten has been collaborating with the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in creating the ongoing exhibition (until the 31st of August), which portraits not only his work, but also his inspiration. In fact Inspirations is a display of the creative process of the designer as well as of the artists and pieces that have been inspiring him. The collaboration successfully culminates in the creation of Dries Van Noten Spring-Summer ’14 collection, which was inspired by the museum’s archive.
